Friday morning, the last working day of the week, and the weekend is almost here. Today’s power cut list is the shortest we’ve seen this week. TNPDCL has planned maintenance shutdowns in 7 substation areas, mostly around Coimbatore, Pudukkottai and Krishnagiri.

If your area isn’t on the list, you can relax. If it is, here’s the full breakdown with areas and timings, so you can plan your day. Everything starts at 9 AM. Two substations get their power back by 2 PM, one by 3 PM, and four have to wait till 4 PM.

Today at a glance

Power back by Number of substations Which ones
2 PM 2 Somayampalayam, Sipcot Pochampally
3 PM 1 Vadaseri
4 PM 4 Irugur, Regunathapuram, Karambakkudy, Neduvasal

Pudukkottai: three whole towns go dark till 4 PM

Three substations in Pudukkottai are marked for the entire area, and all three run from 9 AM to 4 PM. That means the whole town, not just a street or two.

Substation Areas affected Timing
Regunathapuram 33/11 KV Regunathapuram, entire area 9 AM to 4 PM
Karambakkudy 110 KV Karambakudy, entire area 9 AM to 4 PM
Neduvasal 33/11 KV Neduvasal, entire area 9 AM to 4 PM

Seven hours is a long stretch, and it’s not the first time this week that Pudukkottai district has seen cuts. There were entries here on 5 October and 7 October as well. If you run a shop, a flour mill, a photocopy centre or a small workshop in these towns, tell your regular customers early so nobody comes looking for you at noon.

Elders at home who depend on a fan or a BP machine should be checked on during the day. And if you’re a student with exams or assignments, finish anything that needs a charged laptop before 9 AM.

Coimbatore side

Two substations on the Coimbatore side are on the list, and their timings are different.

Substation Areas affected Timing
Somayampalayam 110/22-11 KV Yamuna Nagar, Kalappanaickenpalayam (one part), GCT Nagar, Luna Nagar, Kanuvai, Thadagam Road, Somayampalayam, Agarwal School Road, Cheran Industrial (part), K.N.G. Puthur, Vidhya Colony, Saj Garden and more (the list is cut off in the schedule) 9 AM to 2 PM
Irugur 110 KV Irugur, Ondipudur, Odderpalayam, S.I.H.S. Colony, Pallapalayam (one region), Kannampalayam (one region), Chinniampalayam, Venkitapuram, Thottipalayam, Goldwins 9 AM to 4 PM

The Somayampalayam job is for servicing all the 110 kV and 22 kV breakers and their accessories. It’s a bigger task than the usual monthly maintenance, but it finishes by 2 PM. Because the area list is cut off in the schedule, there may be a few more localities on the list than we can show you here. If you live near Thadagam Road or Kanuvai and your street isn’t named, it’s still worth a quick call to the local EB office.

Irugur is the longer one, and it covers a mix of homes and small industrial units. If you work in one of the workshops around Irugur or Ondipudur, check with your supervisor about whether the shift will run or be moved to the afternoon.

Krishnagiri side

Substation Areas affected Timing
Sipcot Pochampally 110/33-11 KV OLA, Parandapalli, Kallavi, Anandur, Thiruvanapatty, Girigepally, Kattupatty, Vedapatty, Chandirapatty, Panamarathupatty, Veerachikuppam, Soolakarai, Olapatty 9 AM to 2 PM

This one is a monthly maintenance job, and the cut is five hours. A lot of the villages listed here are small, so if you live in one of them, the water motor is the thing you’ll miss first. Fill the tank before 9, or use the time to do the washing and cooking early.

Other areas

Substation Areas affected Timing
Vadaseri 110 KV Vadacheri, Thirumangalakottai, Keelakurichi 9 AM to 3 PM

A smaller list, but a longer wait. The cut here runs six hours, and it’s also marked monthly maintenance.

If it isn’t 9 AM yet

You still have time to get ready. A few things worth doing right now:

  • Fill the tank and any buckets you use for the bathroom.
  • Charge your phone, power bank, torch and emergency lamp.
  • Cook early if you use an induction stove, and keep lunch ready.
  • Keep the fridge door shut as much as possible.
  • Unplug the TV, computer and AC. The voltage can jump when the power comes back.
  • If you work from home, save your files and keep your hotspot ready.

If the current has already gone

No need to panic. If your area is on the list, the work has started, and the power will come back at the time shown above. If it’s out and your area isn’t listed, check with your neighbours first. If their power is on, the problem may be a fuse or MCB in your own house. If everyone’s is out, call the local EB office.
