Saturday morning. Before you put the clothes in the washing machine or switch on the motor for the tank, take two minutes and read this.

TNPDCL has planned current cuts today in 30 substation areas across Tamil Nadu. Don’t worry, it’s all regular maintenance. Every cut starts at 9 AM. The only difference is when the power comes back, so I’ve grouped the areas below. Find your place, check the time, and plan your day around it.

When will the power come back?

Power back by Substations Where
2 PM 17 Hosur and Krishnagiri side, Trichy, Ariyalur, Pollachi, Coimbatore (Gandhipuram side), Anagaputhur
3 PM 4 Thanjavur and Kumbakonam side, Radha Nagar
4 PM 2 Ukkadam and Madukkarai in Coimbatore
5 PM 7 Mayiladuthurai side

So if you’re in Mayiladuthurai, you’re looking at a full eight hours without current. Everyone else gets a shorter break.

Hosur and Krishnagiri (9 AM to 2 PM)

This area has the most substations today, seven in total. All of them are marked monthly maintenance.

Substation Areas
Hosur 110/33-11 KV TVS Nagar, Andhivadi, Mathigiri, Titan Township, Kothur, Muneeswar Nagar
Begepally Begepally, Sipcot, Housing Colony, Sidco Phase-I, MGR Nagar, Kamraj Nagar
Zuzuvadi Zuzuvadi, Mookandapally, Pedarapally, Dharga, Surya Nagar
Bagalur Bagalur, Jeemangalam, Uliyalam, Nallur, Belathur, Sathiyamangalam
Denkanikottai Denkanikottai, Anchetty, Urigam, Thakkatti, Belur, Pennangoor
Nariganapuram Nariganapuram, Berigai, Athimugam, Kejalankottai, K.N. Thotti
Sevaganapally Sevaganapally, Kakkanoor, Chuchukaranapally

If you work in Sipcot or any of the small units around Hosur, better to speak to your supervisor today itself. Five hours is a long time for a production line to sit idle.

Trichy (9 AM to 2 PM)

Four substations in and around Trichy are on the list.

  • Ambikapuram: Ariyamangalam, Kattur, Sangiliyandapuram, Malayappa Nagar, Valluvar Nagar, Muthumani Town
  • Koppampatty: Vairacheetipalayam, Naganallur, Uppiliyapuram, Maradi, P. Mettur, Koppampatty
  • T. Murungapatty: Murungapatty, Vellalapatty, Mangapatty, Batharpettai
  • T. Renganathapuram: Kudineer, Narachingapuram, Pachaimalai, Sellipalayam, Manikapuram, Ammapalayam

Coimbatore and Pollachi

Some of the busiest parts of Coimbatore are included today, and the timing is different for each.

Substation Areas Timing
Coimbatore 110 KV Gandhipuram, Siddhapudur, Tatabad, Race Course, Saibaba Colony, Ramnagar 9 AM to 2 PM
Ukkadam 110 KV Town Hall, Oppanakara Street, T.K. Market, Selvapuram, Sungam, Collectorate 9 AM to 4 PM
Madukkarai 110 KV Arivoli Nagar, Seerapalayam, Palathurai, Madukkarai, A.G. Pathy 9 AM to 4 PM
Pollachi 110 KV Pollachi Town, Vadugapalayam, Chinnampalayam, Kanjampatti, Singanallur 9 AM to 2 PM

Shops around Town Hall and T.K. Market will feel this one the most, since it runs till 4 PM on a Saturday. If you own a shop there, keep your inverter charged or plan some indoor work like stock checking for that time.

Mayiladuthurai side (9 AM to 5 PM)

The longest cut of the day, and all seven substations here follow the same timing.

  • Mayiladuthurai 110/33/11 KV: Town I, II and III, Vadakarai, Manganallur, Vazhuvoor, Moovalur, Koranadu
  • Mayiladuthurai Urban: Dharmapuram, Bazaar, Thiruvilandur, GH
  • Manakkudi: Manakkudi, Semangalam, Mappadugai, Vepangulam
  • Memathur: Memathur, Thiruvilaiyattam, Keezhamathur, Aarupathi
  • Thiruvengadu: Thiruvengadu, Nangoor, Thirunagari, Manickramam, Melaiyur, Industrial
  • Achalpuram: A.K. Chathram, Mahendirapalli, Madhanam, Palaiyar, Thulsendrapuram
  • Arasur: Mathiravellur, Thirumullaivasal, Agani, Perambur

Please fill your water tanks before 9 AM and charge your phones and power banks tonight, or at least first thing in the morning. Eight hours is a long gap, and you don’t want to be searching for a charging point at 2 in the afternoon.

Thanjavur and Kumbakonam side (9 AM to 3 PM)

Substation Areas
Papanasam Papanasam, Kabisthalam
Thiruppanandhal Thiruppanandhal, Cholapuram
Thirupurambiyam Thirupurambiyam, Swamimalai

Ariyalur side (9 AM to 2 PM)

  • Jayankondam 110 KV
  • T. Palur: Arankottai Water Works, T. Palur Water Works, Solamadevi, Sripuranthan, K.V. Kurichi
  • Thaluthalaimedu: Udayanatham, Pillaipalayam, G.K. Puram

Since two water works are on the T. Palur list, water supply timings may go a little off in those villages today.

Near Chennai (Anagaputhur and Radha Nagar)

Substation Areas Timing
Anagaputhur 33/11 KV Venkateswara Nagar, Guruswamy Nagar, MGR Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Arul Nagar 9 AM to 2 PM
Radha Nagar (IRT feeder) Radha Nagar Main Road, Bharathi Puram, Periyar Nagar, IRT Polytechnic 9 AM to 3 PM

A few small things that help

You can’t avoid the cut, but a little planning makes the day easier.

  • Cook early, especially if you use an induction stove.
  • Fill the tank before 9.
  • Charge phones, torches and emergency lamps.
  • Don’t keep opening the fridge. It stays cold for quite a few hours if you leave it shut.
  • Switch off the TV, AC and computer at the plug. When the power returns, there is sometimes a sudden jump in voltage.
  • If you work from home, save your files and keep your mobile hotspot ready.

Why do they do this?

Most of today’s entries say monthly maintenance. The EB staff use these hours to service breakers, tighten loose connections and cut tree branches that are touching the lines. It’s annoying for a few hours, but it means fewer sudden breakdowns later, especially when it rains.

One more thing. The timings come from the official TNPDCL list, and sometimes the work finishes earlier, or runs a little late. Only the areas named above are affected, so your neighbouring locality may have normal supply. If your area isn’t on the list and the current is still gone, call your local EB office.

That’s the list for today. If your area is affected, tell your family and neighbours too, especially elders who may not check the news. We’ll update the page as soon as the next dates come out.
